Domain Transfers

The process for transferring domains between registrars is a source of considerable confusion, mostly because the process differs depending on the type of domain. The primary distinction is between UK domains, where transfers are initiated by the old registrar, and most other domains, where transfers are initiated by the new registrar. This page explains the processes and what you need to do in each case.

Transferring a UK domain to Mythic Beasts

For UK domains (.co.uk, .org.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk) the transfer is initiated by instructing your current registrar to change the IPSTAG for your domain to Mythic Beasts' tag, but before you do this, you must tell us about your intention to transfer the domain so we know who it belongs to when it arrives.

There is no charge for transferring UK domains. If your domain is nearing its expiry date, you should renew it once the transfer is completed.

The steps you must do are as follows:

Log in to our Customer Control Panel go to Domains and select "Transfer In". You will be asked for the name of the domain.
Instruct your current registrar to change the IPSTAG for your domain to "MYTHIC-BEASTS". It is vital that this is spelt accurately. Often this can be done using your current registrars' control panel.
Once the transfer is complete, the domain will appear in your domain list in our control panel.

Please note that transferring the domain to us will not cause a change in the domain's name servers (DNS servers). If you were using your old registrar's DNS servers, you should probably switch to using our name servers, as it is likely that your old registrar will discontinue the service after your domain moves away.

Transferring other domains to Mythic Beasts

The process described here applies to .com, .net and .org domains, but is similar to the process used for almost all non-UK domains. If you have any doubts about the process for other domains, please contact support.

The transfer is initiated using our Customer Control Panel, but before you do this, you should ensure that the domain is unlocked, and that you have the auth code for it. Domain locking is a system that prevents unwanted transfers of your domain, and transfer requests will be automatically declined if it is turned on. It can usually be configured using your registrar's control panel. The auth code is a private code for your domain, needed in order to complete the transfer. Again, this can usually be obtained using your registrar's control panel.

There is a transfer fee for these domains which includes one year's renewal. Please note that for .eu and .be domains, the renewal applies from the date of the transfer, rather than being added to the current expiry date.

The steps you must do are as follows:

Log in to our Customer Control Panel go to domains and select "Transfer In". You will be asked how long you wish to renew the domain for, and asked for contact details and nameserver information.
An email will be sent to the registered admin contact for your domain, with instructions for how to complete the transfer. You will be asked to confirm that you want the transfer to go ahead, and asked for the auth code for your domain.
Your existing registrar may send you a further email, asking you to confirm the transfer.
Once the transfer is completed, it will appear in your list of domains in the control panel.

As part of the transfer process, you will be asked to specify nameservers for your domain. If you were using your old registrar's DNS servers, you should probably switch to using our name servers, as it is likely that your old registrar will discontinue the service after your domain moves away. If you do use our nameservers, then you must also enable DNS for your domain. Once you have initiated the transfer, you can use the Manage DNS link for your domain to do this.

Transferring a UK domain away from Mythic Beasts

In order to transfer a UK domain away from Mythic Beasts, you will need to know the IPSTAG of your new registrar. You should follow the instructions given to you by your new registrar. At some point in the process, they will ask you to change the IPSTAG for your domain. This can be done using Transfer Away option in our Customer Control Panel. When changing the IPSTAG, it is vital that you spell the new tag correctly.

Transferring other domains away from Mythic Beasts

The transfer away is initiated by your new registrar. Before you initiate the transfer, you should ensure that you domain is unlocked, and that you have the auth code for your domain. Your domain can be unlocked using our Customer Control Panel. The same page will give you the auth code.
