Brief Reviews of the films I have seen recently

2000   2001   2002   2003   DVD

Bad Education
I'd heard great things about Almodovar and while I really enjoyed this it wasn't as funny as I expected. Gael Garcia Bernel was brilliant in a multitude of roles and mamanges to almost replicate the swimming pool scene from 'y tu mama tambien' which is always welcome! Not sure what it was trying to say about child abuse and the catholic church since none of the characters are pretty screwed up.

The eternal sunshine state of the spotless mind
Jim Carey didn't annoy me, I really want to go and buy some blue hair colour to copy Kate Winslet and the plot left me wondering if i would 'erase' my bad memories. So all in all a good movie even if i did guess what was going to happen about half way through must read less reviews before going to the cinema

shaun of the dead
Not having seen any other zombie movies put me at a slight disadvantage but like much of Simon pegg's work it was very funny even if i did get the feeling that half the jokes wre going over my head

The Station Agent
A lazy dwarf 'retires' to a country shack to watch trains and avoid people. He succeeds in the first but is slowly intergrated into a small group of misfits and a friendship that conquers all. Not quite as cheesy as it sounds but definatly feel good

Lost in translation
Beautiful story, beautiful camera work. Funny, but not sure I would call it a comedy as radio 4 insists it is, And what was with the fascination with Charlotte's pants? In every other scene she is wearing a warm jumper and a pair of pink knickers!

Waiting for happiness
Unsurprisingly, I was the only person in the cinema to see this story of Mauritanian man's struggle to come to terms with his mothers culture before emigrating to Europe. More surprisingly still the film had already started by the time I got there and had i not arived they would have shown the whole movie to an empty room. Admittedly i mainly went to see the film as a pretaste of what i can expect when i goto Mauritania in february but it was intereting to see the refugees/asylum seeks story from the point of view of those left behind. The soundtrack was rather groovy in places so i might have to try and find some of the music whilst I am over there.

Wilbur wants to kill himself
suitably dour comedy (from a Danish director set in scotland) that touches mental illness, terminal cancer and extreme poverty whilst remaining light and hopeful.

The Mother
This semed at first like a simple tale of love across the generation gap but quickly deteriorated into a study of possibly the most disfunctional family in London. I didn't really get why any of the characters acted the way they did but then i may be bad at empathy.
