Brief Reviews of the films I saw in 2000
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone
Likeable and a bit smaltzy (I guess that's what I should have expected from a kids film). Slightly
disappointing but then I am not sure anything could have lived up to the hype.
What's cooking?
Four families prepare for thanksgiving with all the arguments, revelations and petty jealousies
expected from periods of enforced proximity with relations. The really ought to produce a cook book of
the amazing dishes created for the feast.
Requiem for a Dream
Charting the destruction of three lives due to drug addiction this film somehow manages to avoid
preaching. The inserts illustrating the effect of each drug worked well although this film is not for the faint hearted, with graphic portrayals of injections, septicaemia, electroshock treatment.
Captain Correlli's Mandolin
Distinct lack of chemistry between the two lead characters let this film down but the island is beautiful so as a travel show it probably worked quite well.
