Brief Reviews of the films I sw in 2001

Me without You
Deals with vaguely the same themes as Ghost World, growing up, growing apart etc. Holly struggles for three decades to emerge from her best friend's shadow whilst Marina seems to become more and more like her mother as the film progresses.

Moulin Rouge
Loud, bright and fast. There were some beautiful scenes and clever use of lyrics but I did leave the cinema feeling like I had just got off a roller coaster and could do with a lie down.

But I'm a Cheerleader
Bubble gum coloured comedy about a camp to 're-educate' gay teenagers. Feels like it should have been made in Australia (Muriel’s Wedding, Pricilla the Queen of the Desert).

2001 space odyssey
The first two thirds are a beautifully shot, understated, and chilling piece of Sci Fi. The last third seems to have been an excuse to play around with dodgy pop video effects on a big screen. Frankly all the swirling and psychedelic shapes made me feel sea sick and left me even more confused by the ending.
