Brief Reviews of the films I saw in 2002
Donnie Darko
What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night to meet a giant bunny rabbit that tells you
that the world will end in 28 days? If you are Donnie Darko you carry on taking those pills, falling
in love, going to therapy whilst trying to figure out the philosophy of time travel. Having seen the
film twice I am still unsure what exactly was going on but the superb acting and brilliant writing make
it worth the effort. The sound track is pretty cool too
Kissing Jessica Stein
I had been waiting for about 6 months for this to come to Cambridge so I guess it wasn't surprising I
was slightly disappointed. It is not that it is a bad film, just that it is little more than a well
made Rom-Com with the twist that the Protagonists are both straight women. Good but not great
O
The delayed release (to avoid offence in a post columbine era) has allowed many of the actors to go on
to become stars, and rightly so as it is generally well acted. It is supposedly a modern day retelling
of Othello although being unkultured and not having read/seen Shakespeare's version I wouldn't know.
Lovely and Amazing Not at all what I expected, Brenda Blethyn plays a middle aged American with three neurotic daughters, Interesting to see which character traits each inherited from their mother even if it does labour the point a bit.
Tortilla Soup
It is a very strange feeling watching a remake of a film you have actually seen (Eat Drink Man Woman).
I think it works ok, plenty of amazing food being prepared and lots of sibling squabbles but I left
thinking I wanted to find out how to cook cactus rather than rent the video
The Cat's Meow
Wow a film in which Eddie Izzard doesn't suck! An assortment of 1920's Hollywood types congregate for a boat party. Kind of Jeeves and Wooster without the jokes meets a murder mystery where the killing
happens at the very end so we know who did it and why. Still very enjoyable.
Minority Report
I am not usually into futuristic Spielberg films but this was really quite good. Sure some of the
costumes were a bit outlandish and the mix of Bizarre SciFi and Armish like touches (wooden croquet
balls anyone) kind of jarred but I was kept the plot twists were cool and I didn't feel like punching
Tom Cruise so it can't be too bad. I could have done without the last 2 minutes though
Italian For Beginners
Dogme film set in a small Danish Village, funny but not a comedy, bleak but ultimately uplifting.
Pretty good.
Y tu mama tambien
I am sure this has something interesting to say about the politics of Mexican Society but basically it
is an excuse for lots of teenage groping and cringe worthy sex scenes. If that’s your thing go and
pretend to be being arty, otherwise avoid
Monsters Ball
Bizarre tale of finding love in unlikely places, Not very believable but that is not really the actors
fault. It would be nice if this was the film that resulting in the abolition of the death penalty in
the States, instead it will be remembered for THAT Oscar speech, Oh well I guess it was slightly
preferable to Gwyneth's effort
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Audrey Hepburn looks gorgeous, she likes living in the big city and seems incapable of making any
decisions. Soppy ending and half the events from the book have been removed to make it more acceptable
to Hollywood. Still an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon even if as Rick said, they never did get
breakfast!
Divided we Fall
Czech film depicting life during the Nazi occupation and one couple's attempt to shelter a young Jewish
friend. As the film progresses you become less and less sure who the good guys are and what you would
have done in the same position
Apocolypse Now - redux
Strange, occasionally very funny, slightly depressing, and very long. I haven't seen the original so I
can't really compare it but some of the special effects were very cool. Glad I saw it, not sure I would
rush out to do so again though
Amelie
Entertaining, feel good movie that somehow avoids descending into Disney style shmaltz by a)being french and b)featuring a strange subplot about a photo-me booth.
Together
Swedish film (lukas moodysson) about commune life and the people that inhabit it. Stereotypical
hippies, political activists, estranged wives and children named Tet (after the Tet offensive) come
together in a exploration of friendship, love and family. Oh and the funniest film I have seen all
year.
Ghost World
Enid knows exactly what she doesn't want to be but is not quite sure what she does want. As her best
friend slowly gets drawn into the Starbucks and IKEA world they have spent most of their school days
mocking, Enid searches for purpose with a strange man she meets through the classifieds! Very very
funny, and a brilliant sound track.
