I am not sure I understand Carol Ann Duffy's poem about pearls but I am still intrigued by it. Her poem Valentine is about as far from clinton cards as you can get.
This one by Dorothy Parker seems to describe exactly how I feel at 7:30 each morning

I have a theory that all popular music is about Love and Loss and the themes reappear in these poems too.
I think D.H. Lawrence describes vanity quite well in Intimates and has a rather pragmatic view of relationships
