Pricing
Our refreshingly boring approach to pricing
Are you fed up with services advertised with "introductory" pricing that ramps up massively upon renewal? Tired of having to switch suppliers or threaten to leave each year just to get the same price as a new customer?
Us too, which is why we're proud to not be a part of this. At Mythic Beasts, we aim to provide fair, straightforward pricing.
All of our services are priced on a sustainable basis from the start, and we offer the same price to everyone whether it's a new service or a renewal, and whether you're a new or existing customer.
This page gives some more details on how we set and update prices for our services.
Domain registrations
The domain registration industry is notorious for introductory pricing, offering ludicrous below-cost first year discounts with losses clawed back through excessive renewal prices, or a hard sell on overpriced, unnecessary extras.
Our domain registration prices are all calculated automatically based on applying a standard margin to the price that our suppliers charge us. This means that in almost all cases, renewals cost the same as registration — the only exceptions are where the registries charge us a different price, and a very small number of particularly bureaucratic TLDs where we actually charge a premium for new registrations to cover setup costs. In all cases, prices are listed on our website.
We update our price list from time to time to reflect changes in domain fees, currency exchange rates and other costs. You can see our current prices on our domains page. When prices change, the new price applies to all customers, from the next renewal.
We never charge transfer-out fees, and we make it easy to export your DNS records should you want to move away.
Web & Email Hosting
The pricing of our standard hosting account (including shell access) has remained unchanged since the company was founded in 2000, although the specification has increased significantly in this time. We have quite a few customers who've been enjoying exactly the same fair pricing for a quarter of a century!
We charge the same price for renewals of our Web & Email Hosting as for new accounts. We occasionally review pricing and specification of services. When this happens, we will update our website, notify customers, and changes will take effect from the next renewal.
Virtual servers
Our Virtual Server pricing is set based on the cost of providing the service, which is primarily a combination of hosting costs (power, networking and data centre cost) and hardware costs (servers). From time to time we will update our prices and specifications to reflect changes in these costs. When this happens we will update the price list on our website and existing customers will either get the new price from their next renewal or get an increase in server specification for the same price, in order to ensure that the service is at least as good value as we would offer on a new service.
Dedicated servers
Dedicated Server pricing is determined by a combination of hosting costs (power, networking and data centre costs) and a hardware cost (the value of the server). The hosting component of the price (or the included network bandwidth) will be updated from time to time to reflect changes in the cost of providing the service, but the hardware component remains fixed. If the cost of new hardware changes — up or down — then this will be reflected in the price or specification for a new service, but will not affect the price of existing services.
Existing customers can, of course, migrate onto a new server to take advantage of our latest hardware specifications and pricing, subject to availability.
Annual and quarterly discounts
With the exception of domain registrations, almost all services are available on monthly, quarterly and annual plans. The longer terms include a discount:
- Annual hosting is charged at ten times the monthly cost (two months free).
- Quarterly hosting is charged at 11/4 times the monthly cost (one month free per year).
Unless specified otherwise, the longer terms can be cancelled by giving 30 days notice, and we will credit the unused hosting period pro-rata.
